Here goes..
Lets call her Miss X for now. X was returning from the gym at around 9 in the night. She was walking back to her house and there was a guy who started following her half way through. She didn’t really notice it at the time she left the gym, but when she had taken the turn to her street and the guy still followed, she pretty much knew for certain that he WAS following her. She started walking faster, but the stalker did the same too. The streetlights in her area were not working and since there was reconstruction work going in the ground floor of the apartments there, no lights from there either. So basically it was pitch dark.
The faster she walked, so did he. Half way into the street, she started running and started screaming for help. He ran behind her. Obviously faster, he caught up with her and grabbed her so hard and groped her fully. There are nail marks in her body right now. After having done that, he left in the two wheeler that he had planted in that place earlier. This whole fiasco had been planned!!
The girl had screamed her heart out. All the way, from where she started running, but as always no one came. The guy was too fast for her to notice the reg. no. of the vehicle and obviously she was too shocked and shaken to have too. When she was running, she could hear TV’s scream away from places, and those people were oblivious to the fact that a girl had just went through something so miserable.
She was pretty brave not to have broken down to the neighbours and instead went to the privacy of her apartment called her mother, who is abroad, and started crying on hearing her voice. The mother came home the next evening, but I am pretty sure she’d never be able to forget this FOREVER!!
One thing led to another and all of us started talking abt how each of us have experienced such situations. One girl walking home and a bunch of guys in a car started circling her, calling her names. The girl was lucky to have an auto pass by to get into immediately. I don’t understand if this is the idea of fun for guys. These incidents might seem to satisfy their senses for a few minutes or even perhaps days, but it leaves the girl traumatised for life. It might sound over dramatic, but its true.
The anger I felt when I heard these stories.. The disgust!!! HOW?? HOW COULD THEY DO THESE to other Human Beings?? Living, Breathing things.. HOW COULD THEY?? Some people even have the audacity to say that we ‘ask’ for it. The BLOODY NERVE!! I can assure you that none of these people were wearing any micro-mini’s.. It was just plain salwar, after a gym workout. But even the ones with bare clothing wouldn’t like stuff like these to happen to them.
Just the other day, standing at the billing counter in a shop I observed, there was enough place for two people to have walked, on a passageway, comfortably. A 30 somthing man and a 20+ girl were walking in the opp. direction in that passage. The girl turned sideways to let the guy go by comfortably. But Mr. I-need-to-feel-you, extended his elbows such that it touched the girl’s parts. The girl stopped, turned back and gave that guy a stare, he merely turned smirked and went by his usual business. What could the girl do?? She shook her head, looked a little irritated and walked away.
It HURTS!! It REALLY HURTS!! The guys will never understand how it is to be talked to, when the guy barely looks at your face and talks. It affects you. You just want to scream out aloud. You want to ask him to look at your face and talk. But, all your life, you are taught to be discrete about things and you just let it pass. You get used to it after a point of time but somehow it gets carried on, in a sub-conscious level and it alters who we are for the rest of our life. Most girls become defensive to the slightest approach of anybody and boys being boys prefer to assume that those girls are snobs. And these mumbai-wallas come to chennai and ask,”Why is your society so primitive?? Why do they still wear salwars always??”. Well!! This is why..
All this while, the society will keep yapping about, “HOW OUR AGE OLD CULTURE IS AND HOW WE SHOULD PRESERVE IT.” The stupid, two faced, hypocrites. They believe that the culture is so pure by just not hearing or talking or seeing or believing that there are things like this, that still occur. Blind men can’t talk about how blue the sky is.. But our HOLIER THAN THOU society will.
If a girl wears saree, they look. If she wears a salwar, they look. If she wears jeans, they look. If she wears a skirt, they look. THEY LOOK!! PERIOD!! I don’t know when on earth, men can accept that this is just skin that they are after. SKIN!! FLESH!! White skin, dark skin, more skin, less skin.. But SKIN!! None the more!! It hurts me more deeply to know that I can’t do anything about it. It just plain hurts!!
